Fraud Awareness & Support

East Coast CU joined the global effort to minimize the impact of fraud by promoting anti-fraud awareness and education.

  • WE WILL NEVER ask you for your 16 digits of your East Coast Credit Union debit card number.
  • WE WILL NEVER send you messages requesting you to click a link to review or block a fraudulent transaction on your account, or advise that you are locked out of your account.
  • WE WILL NEVER email and ask you to enter your debit card number, login details or any personal information anywhere. If you are in doubt, always delete emails of this nature.
  • WE WILL NEVER email, text or phone you asking you to provide your One Time Passcode (OTP) or debit card information in order to confirm a recent transaction. These should never be shared with anyone in any circumstances.
  • NEVER divulge your One Time Passcode (OTP) for card transactions or when you are setting up Apple Pay or Google Pay onto a smart phone.
  • HANG UP if you have doubts about the validity of the caller. Simply hang up and source the phone number for that company to make contact.
What is Phishing?

An unauthorized attempt to retrieve sensitive information (e.g., usernames, passwords, debit card information) by posing as an official representative of a company or organization in an electronic communication.

What is Vishing?

(Voice and Phishing)

Receiving a call from a fraudster posing as a representative of your Credit Union, bank, the Gardaí, Revenue or a service provider for example, a mobile company, internet provider, or a computer company.

They deceive you into thinking they are an official representative of a company and that it is in your best interest to provide the information they request such as your personal credentials, for example a one time passcode (OTP) necessary for 3D secure transactions and the setup of your smart phone with Apply Pay and Google Wallet.

What is Smishing?

(Combination of SMS (text message) and Phishing)

‘Text messages sent at random to mobile numbers requesting you to click on a ‘link’ either to ‘update’, ‘verify’, or ‘activate’ your account’s personal information.

The link brings you to a fake website where the fraudster is impersonating to be the official company.
